Hi. I would like to make some comments and ask you questions about your blog entries.
I watched some of the "cool" video you embedded. I'm not sure what it has to do with ecology though. For today, I would like you to read my comments below and answer my questions about "The Soil Food Web" task. Then, please embed the Task B food web from last week and answer those questions. Then, you can watch the "termite reaction" video and tell me more about it.
About question # 2:
For # 2the picture is showing that the "organic matter" is under ground. It is referring to dead organic materials, such as dead roots, dead plants, and dead animals. In this case the organic matter is not a consumer. It is material that is being consumed. You named fungi ad nematodes as first order consumers. What is the other first order consumer pictured?
In the worm tank, are there any living plants? Are the "nemotodes" in the worm tank eating live plant roots?
What do you think the worms in the tank are eating?
According to http://www.wsu.edu/DrUniverse/worms.html worms eat bacteria, fungi, algae and dead organic matter (dead leaves and plants). Hmmm, what do you think? Do you think it would be accurate to draw an arrow from the organic matter to the fungal and bacterial eating nemotodes?
Organisms that cause dead things to decay are called decomposers. Actually, bacteria and fungi are microscopic decomposers. Decomposers you can see are called "detrivores". Do you think that nemotodes could also be decomposers? Why or why not?
About question # 3. The nemotodes are 1st, 2nd, or 3rd order consumers depending on which chain you follow. The arthropods are 2nd or 3rd order consumers dependig on which chain you follow. The birds are 4th or 5th order consumers depending on which chain you follow? What is one more high order consumer?
